“Everyone needs to make Shannon Airport a top political priority”
Clare Fine Gael TD Joe Carey has today said that the public in County Clare and the Mid-West should make their voices heard in relation to the governance and future economic stability of Shannon Airport.
Deputy Carey said that efforts currently underway to organise petitions and online support groups are to be welcomed, and that it is this type of ground up movement that will ensure that Shannon Airport gets political priority.
Deputy Carey said:
“I was happy to lend my name to a recent petition calling for support of Shannon Airport, and was also impressed by a local Facebook campaign. It is vitally important that the people most affected by the uncertainty surrounding Shannon Airport make their voices heard.
No government can ignore the wishes of the electorate. As we saw with the medical cards fiasco, when people take to the streets and make their voices heard, government has to listen. Maybe its time for a mass public demonstration in support of Shannon Airport as there is such high levels of anger, frustration and discontentment amongst the public.”
“I want to commend locals for organising these campaigns and encourage all the people of this region to get active in ensuring Shannon Airport is foremost in the minds of this Government. Our own Clare Minister Tony Killeen could be playing a vital role in ensuring Shannon is a top Governmental priority but all the recent evidence suggesonomic stability of Shannon Airport.

This has to change. People can make a difference, and notwithstanding the aloofness of this government, they can be made listen to local, ground up movements.”
“Shannon Airport has been forgotten about by successive Fianna Fáil led governments. There is so much uncertainty in the region due to high levels of unemployment coupled with the loss of passanger, routes and flights from Shannon.”
“We have a unique facility in the US customs and border pre-clearance facility, yet data suggests its not getting the business. The proposed Lynx Cargo project also presents a massive opportunity for growth and jobs creation. Far too many of the stories surrounding Shannon Airport in recent months have been bad news stories.”
